Gallery:Jonathan Shorr Gallery 109 Crosby St. NY, NY 10012 call for hours (212) 334-1199 SoHo
Description: A reception exhibiting the works of artist Brian Leo. Throughout his career, Brian Leo has been creating paintings in a style best typified as Garage Pop Surrealism. In what he refers to as a garbage parade of small paintings, artist Brian Leo addresses culture, politics and American identity. The parade, a cavalcade of tiny images exhibited en masse, show events of deep cultural significance flanked by bizarre meditations on moments of Leos personal experience. Each tiny piece, in turn, contradicts itself; episodes rank with chaos and suffering explode off the canvas in bubblegum garage-pop tones. Leos work also reflects the cynicism and questioning that plagues the daily lives of disappointed youth. Questions of truth, behind the never-ending array of contemporary tragedies are clearly a repeated theme in Leos work. Instead of using his painting as an opportunity to mourn or repent, Leo instead explores his own fears and conspiracy theories of what lies behind the headlines.

Exhibit: 06/01/2007 - 06/21/2007 Group exhibit: Agora Gallery Presents Kenji Inoue
Gallery:Agora Gallery 530 West 25th Street, in Chelsea See description area for hours (212) 226 4151 Chelsea
Description: With bold, lush and painterly strokes, artist Kenji Inoue creates abstract paintings that go beyond mere color experimentation. Inoues canvases incorporate negative space as a subject in his work; the white space surrounding his vivid colors allows the viewer a peek into the process of creation. The viewer can see the canvas underneath the masterfully painted colors, and the effect is like seeing a face behind a mask, a bone beneath flesh. The awareness that Inoue grants his viewers is inspiring; when the viewer can participate in the process of art-making, the end result is that much more meaningful. Kenji Inoue studied painting and illustration at the Tokyo Communications and Arts Professional School for two years. He currently lives and works in Japan. Exhibition Dates: June 1 to June 21. Exhibit: 05/04/07 - 05/24/07 Group exhibit: Agora Gallery Showcases Tiziana Pantaleoni
Gallery:Agora Gallery 530 West 25th Street, in Chelsea, New York See description area for hours (212) 226 4151 Chelsea
Description: Agora Gallery Showcases Tiziana Pantaleoni Tiziana Pantaleoni uses her paintings as a vehicle for philosophical discourse. The whirling, forceful lines and brazen colors speak of the individuals quest to come to terms with the inner turmoil of the psyche. Correspondingly, her works range from playful to ominous in mood, employing the expressive possibilities of line to capture the sound-like reverberations of the soul. Born in Rome, Pantaleoni developed an immense interest in the philosophy of C.G. Jung and his theories on the archetypal figure and its application in social roles. Though she began her artistic career as a portrait artist, she turned to Abstract Expressionism because of the instinctual nature of the style and its emotive qualities. My artwork originates from philosophical need to explore psyches most deep essence whichEelongs to all humanity and eludes space-time laws.EPantaleoni has exhibited frequently around Rome, and recently in New York. She lives and works in Rome. From May 4 to May 24 at Agora Gallery, 530 West 25th Street, Chelsea, New York. Gallery hours: Tuesday-Saturday 11am - 6pm. Opening Reception May 10th, 6-8 PM. Description: Collective Exhibition: Contemporary Art at its Best Opens Feb 20th at Agora Gallery in Chelsea, New York Form and Substance Whether through the fragile translucency of glass or the weight and power inherent in thick brushstrokes of oil, the exhibition presents profound studies of the individual in a moment of crisis, apathy or enjoyment. Presenting Karen Carey, Joel Carpenter, Dibyendu Dey, JBuza, and Soojin Jeong. Figuratively Speaking Figuratively Speaking takes the charms of fantastic narrative to the visual medium, presenting exceptional works in oil and bronze. Color and Candor Testifying to the potency of color in contemporary symbolism, Color and Candor showcases paintings by four outstanding artists from different cultural backgrounds. Classical tradition and contemporary perception meet in a unique exhibition that presents still lifes ranging from imaginative surrealism to figurative representation. Description: Dear Sir/Madam, I would like to invite you to our upcoming exhibition that may be of interest to you. Tripping The Light Fantastic, The Exhibition of Fine Art Photography showcases the latest display of fine art photography by artists from all over the world.Images are available at http://www.agora-gallery.com/ExhibitionAn nouncement/09_20_2006.aspx . Best regards, Amanda Aaron Agora Gallery Public Relations 530 West 25th Street, in Chelsea, New York 212-226-4151 ext. 207 www.Agora-Gallery.com Tripping the Light Fantastic: An Exhibition of Fine Art Photography The multi-faceted styles and interests of contemporary photographers are on display at Agora Gallery’s annual Tripping the Light Fantastic. The variety of natural forms and soulful vistas captivate the interests of photographers Terry Amburgery, Enrico Cortesano, and Randall Harris; their works often feature the dance of light and reflection. Beth Parin’s works are visually seductive, incorporating Ansel Adams-style vistas coupled with Surrealist intrigue. Australian photographer, Rebecca Devereaux creates iridescent portraits of plants and flowers by zooming in to remove all traces of context in a celebration of the complexity and elegance of natural forms. Mirko Angeli and Erique Crusellas Prieto focus their efforts on urban themes and consumer culture, ranging stylistically from the mysterious to the surreal. The most painterly photographer in the exhibition is Christian Egger, his images are starkly reminiscent of the Abstract Expressionists. Egger’s photos are created by working the surface of the photographs with a variety of tools, his favorite being a surgeon’s scalpel. The photography of T.R. Bishop and Tommaso Leto both center around the inescapable effects of time on ordinary materials. For both artists meaning is imbued solely by the materials being photographed, a stunning visual selection of the struggle between construction and destruction. Nicole Loverso photographs a variety of subjects, some natural and some man-made. By reducing her concept to its most essential elements Loverso allows for multi-layered readings and a meaningful interaction between the audience and her work. From September 20 through October 10, 2006, Agora gallery presents Tripping the Light Fantastic in SoHo, 415 West Broadway. An opening reception will be held on Thursday, September 21 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm.

Dumbo, Brooklyn (F Train to York St. or A/C to High St.) Dumbo, Brooklyn September 15th, 2006 Emerging artist Daniel Anthony St. George II, also known as AZStar78, presents his newest body of work in his solo exhibit, Unsung. The show will be exhibited at halcyon the shop in Dumbo, Brooklyn from September 15th through October 11th, 2006. This is his second show at halcyon the shop, a follow up to his Whole Milk in 2003. Unsung is a continued progression from his February 2006 solo show in New York City, Odds and Ends, at Orchard Street Gallery, which featured a large collection of pen-and-ink drawings. St. Georges work for Unsung will consist of new drawings on vintage sheet music. The pieces are fashioned on found paper, creating a romantic and interesting duality. His contemporary pieces project an eerie, yet calm feeling and parallels the artists feelings on relationships, life and death. Most of St. Georges work is autobiographical, demonstrating his fearless admission of his own failures and heartaches. When asked to comment, St. George said about the new work, I wanted something that was nostalgic and would make people reflect on life and their own weaknesses. I admit that my work is not all sunshine and rainbows, but I think even the darkest [piece] has a silver lining; Out of all suffering comes a lesson learned. Many consider AZStar to be somewhat of a transient, previously living in Miami, New York, Los Angeles and Las Vegas. He currently resides in San Francisco. halcyon the shop is open Tuesday, Friday 12-9; Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday 12-8; Sunday 12-6, & Monday by appointment only. Exhibit: 08/25/2006 - 09/16/2006 Group exhibit: Contemporary Art at its Best in New York City
Gallery:Agora Gallery 415 West Broadway in SoHo, NY 10012 See description area for hours SoHo
Description: A Collective Exhibition: Contemporary Art at its Best, an exhibition in two parts: Expressions in Abstraction and Contemporary Narratives. Date: August 25 September 16, 2006 Reception: Thursday, August 31, 2006 6-8 PM Gallery Hours: Tuesday Saturday, 11 AM 6 PM Place: 415 West Broadway in SoHo, NY 10012 Directions: http://admin.agora-gallery.com/GalleryInfo/SohoWalkingInformation.aspx. Agora Gallery, located at 415 W. Broadway in SoHo, is pleased to present A Collective Exhibition: Contemporary Art at its Best. The exhibition gathers the works of artists from around the world in a broad exposition of contemporary narrative and expressive abstraction. The exhibition showcases ancient and modern motifs in contemporary imagery, metaphorical drama, and the multi-dimensional aspects of illustration that range form comic commentary to visceral pragmatism. Wojciech Cypkos work possesses a stark elegance and an understated aesthetic that beautifully compliments the feeling of modern loneliness and isolation conveyed in his paintings. His sense of balance in these paintings is flawless; the viewer feels privileged to see the world through this artists unique perspective. Debbie Davies re-contextualizes the spiral motif common in the iconography of various cultures, from Celtic to Buddhist to South American, allowing it to become a visual representation of humanity's commonalities. Inspired by these themes, Davies allows the painting process to control itself, working spontaneously and yet with a strong sense of geometry and balance. Using brightly pigmented hues, Nacera Guerin shows the human form blooming with life, physical vitality, and emotional intensity. Guerins work celebrates the body, especially the female body, in all its forms and variations. Guerins paintings are bold and brave; each one tells a story and sends a message that urges the viewer to take part in the dynamism of life that Guerin represents on her canvases. Andrew Killicks artistic eye leads him towards the colorful portrayal of autumn leaves. Killick colors his objects in a continuous and flowing wash of colors, adding texture and emphasizing the natural curvatures of the leaves. This fluid style creates the appearance of being underwater or looking at nature through an aquarium. With fiery colors and bold strokes, Manu W. creates intense works in the style of Abstract Expressionism. Manu states that her works are emotionally based and serve as a mirror to the soul. Manus works possess an air of excitement subdued by an analytical mind, who organizes color and line into pleasing, if unexpected, arrangement. Derek Alvarez's encounters with racism and violence in his youth drove him to explore the reality lying behind the outward appearance of things. Alvarez selects disparate characters and styles from comic books and pop culture to transform their meaning, the comical nature of his art acting to sublimate the negativity surrounding him. I remember lots of hatred and violence on television as well as in real life, he says, it made me look inward and create a better world in my mind. If the work of German-born artist Irene Brandt seems familiar, perhaps that is because her paintings have graced dozens of calendars and were chosen two years running as UNICEFs holiday greeting card. Self-taught, Brandts style is best described as naive or folk art. Specializing in acrylic paint since 1996, Brandt produces vividly whimsical scenes with the intent of disseminating a positive view of the world. Inspired by the batik prints and wood carvings of her native Indonesia, Nouke Sudiono weaves a magical, modern-day narrative worthy of great storytellers like Scheherezade in the Thousand and One Nights. Using bold color combinations and delicate motifs, Sudiono renders the world around her in enigmatic terms: she takes us into a realm where the familiar takes on unfamiliar, mysterious qualities. With provocative perspective and an unconventional palette, artist Michelle Leivan successfully captures the viewer within the spaces of her dramatic scenes. Taking as her primary subject the female form, Leivan successfully delivers each piece as a dynamic work of art, incessantly daring her viewers to locate the specific nuances and subtle essence of facial expression and gesture within each painting. Exploring tensions between restraint and abandon, Anissa Mendez weaves intimate confessions of the nightlife into the canvas, animating shadows, emotional scenes and vivid memories. Depicting the loneliness and ritualized escapism of contemporary American life, Mendez portrays the bartender as keeper and giver of

Gallery:Agora Gallery 530 W. 25th St. in Chelsea See description area for hours (212) 226-4151 Chelsea
Description: An exhibition in four parts: Liberated Perspectives, Captured Impression, Symbiotic Texture, and The Matrix of Abstractions. The exhibition presents sculpture, Chinese art, landscape paintings and paintings in the abstract, surrealist and magic-realist strain by artists from all over the world. Norwegian artist Tore Hogstvedt is fascinated with the quiet beauty of nature is its ability to change from one moment to the next. In dedicating himself to careful observation, Hogstvedt not only describes what nature looks like, but lets us know how it feels to be there. Painted with a caring and empathetic delicacy, Angela Perry's flowers float forth from the depth of the canvas like soft sheets of light pealed from the soul. Full of mystery and tantalizing presence, the coiling folds and curves of the images dance with flirtatious grace, as if quivering in a silent wind of fervent thoughts. For Serbian artist Nikola Nicolic, her work is self-affirming, a record of her interactions with nature, its shapes, and spirits. Her unselfconscious use of non-traditional hues evokes the fauvist agenda of self-expression, a driving force behind her creativity. Karla Capralis works are supernatural windows into imagined worlds. These surrealist, magic-realism inspired provinces map tumultuous landscapes filled with vivid personal symbology. Jolanta Paterek takes her viewers on a cyclical journey called Purification, which can stir a negative or positive transformation. She randomly couples a modified bathtub, a painting and a black box, the fusion of which awakens a striking impression in its audience. Aware that he can never truly escape the inherent ethnic influences that inform his work, Chinese artist Zhang Ge embraces them, incorporating their iconography into each piece. The result is a successful union between the delicate art of traditional porcelain painting and contemporary theory. Melanie Prapopoulos extensive experience with different cultures has created a unique mixture for her artistic vocabulary. She has fused ideas of dance and strong lines to lead the eye to venture upward in her expression and to bring a sense of comfort and openness to accepting the shapes. In Kenji Inoues paintings, the viewer can see the canvas underneath the masterfully painted colors, and the effect is like seeing a face behind a mask, a bone beneath flesh. The awareness that Inoue grants his viewers is inspiring; when the viewer can participate in the process of art-making, the end result is that much more meaningful. Levi Parsley paints fantastic landscapes filled with strangeness and wonder. Working in the Surrealist style, Parsley draws his subject matter entirely from his imagination and creates extraordinary dream worlds for his viewer. The Collective Exhibition: Contemporary Art at its Best is on display June 28 July 19, 2006. Reception takes place June 29 6-8 PM. Agora Gallery, 530 W. 25th Street in Chelsea, New York. Description: In the Anzac tradition and spirit of mateship Agora Gallery, SoHo presents Out From Down Under and Beyond: The Australian and New Zealand Art Exhibition. Known as the Unites Nations of the Art World, Agora Gallery brings artists from these neighboring island nations together as representative of contemporary Oceanic art. Although separated by the Tasman Sea, the artists included in Agoras Australian and New Zealand art exhibition share an affinity for the natural environment that surrounds them. This is expressed through the myriad of colors each artist utilizes to express their own unique experience and memory of their native and adoptive homelands. The result is a propitious sampling of works from the abstract to the figurative the spectrum of which transports the Manhattan based gallery to the land down under and beyond. Out From Down Under and Beyond: The Australian and New Zealand Art Exhibition successfully gathers artists that embody the continuum of Afro-Australasian art practices. From the traditional Aboriginal Dreamtime dot paintings of John Weeronga Bartoo to the urban materials incorporated into the surreal works of Cathyrn Condon, the audience is witness to a seamless view of Oceanias artistic past, present, and future. Public Opening: 05/11/06 at 6pm
Exhibit: 05/10/06 - 05/30/06 Group exhibit: Pixel Perfect: The Digital Art Exhibition
Gallery:Agora Gallery 530 West 25th Street Tues-Sat: 10-6 (212) 226-4151 Chelsea
Description: Pixel Perfect: The Digital Art Exhibition at Agora Gallery has become an important periodic barometer of trends in state of the art image making, as evidenced by the latest installment in the series in the gallerys Chelsea space, 530 West 25th Street, from May 10 through 30. (Reception: May 11, from 6 to 8 PM.) Mexican artist Pablo Camilo Vergara chooses themes that enable him to indulge a fondness for contrasts between the numinous and the shadowy in his inkjet prints on canvas. His chromatic skill and penchant for dramatic symbolism are especially striking in Wandering Angel, in which the subject, seen in close-up within a nocturnal forest partly illuminated by her aura, has a decidedly earthly beauty. Conversely, Arcane Angel is a somewhat more ethereal vision, with the figure enveloped by radiant swirls. Edith Suchodrew, an artist born and trained in Latvia, who has lived in Germany since 1991, brings wide-ranging experience in oil painting and other traditional mediums to bear in digital C-prints bursting with baroque forms and blazing with brilliant colors. One can only describe Suchodrews compositions as visionary, given their synthesis of abstraction and figurative elements, suggesting some alternate reality or higher consciousness in which the effects of light and color are considerably heightened. By contrast, Adi Rizansky Nir, an artist living and working in Israel, finds inspiration for her inkjet prints on canvas enhanced by painting in scientific sources. Microscopic images of molecular cell culture are blown up to easel scale and employed as stepping-stones to abstraction in Nirs compositions, informed by her study of biology and Masters Degree in Science. Nir calls her work a case of art imitating life in the most literal of senses. Yet her prints go far beyond the literal interpretation of scientific phenomena, becoming abstract evocations with a metaphysical dimension that transcends even the most advanced reaches of science. The conceptually witty French artist Ben Boutin likes to insert himself into his digital prints, becoming an actor in dramas of his own devising, such as one in which he presides over a contemporary Last Supper. Especially piquant is Ben Boutin Giving a Piece of Advice Regarding the War, in which the artist appears between George Bush and Tony Blair wearing a t-shirt that says, Jesus is Coming. Even more germane than the artists incongruous presence is his dressed-down appearance and insouciant expression. He casts his deadpan gaze on Blair as though noticing dandruff on his shoulder. Another bright visual wit, New York artist Marco Mark puts a new spin on Pop in digital etchings on photograph paper with self-explanatory titles such as Britney in a Campbell Soup Can Headdress and Warhol Factory. Framing fragmented icons of high and low culture within geometric compositions and strident hues, like Warhol himself, Mark applies his commercial experience as a former art director in a fine art context, creating images as effortlessly persuasive as a well-oiled ad campaign. By digitally altering photographs taken from around the world, Israeli-artist Carmit Haller creates collages of color and shape the equivalent of visual free verse. The result is a graceful and poetic arrangement of brilliantly colored abstractions. With no deliberate message or meaning she seeks to engage the spectator visually, delivering him or her to a purely aesthetic experience. She accomplishes this in the individual composition of each canvas as well as in their relation to one another. Alone, her canvases inspire. Together, they awe the viewer and transport them to the kaleidoscopic world she has created. As founder of a successful ad agency in the Netherlands, Leon Kipping is another artist with commercial expertise. However, Kipping prefers to separate his fine art from his professional experience, creating images digitally, transferring them to canvas, and painting over them with acrylic. The resulting compositions are primarily abstract explorations of form, color, and texture that often allude to landscape or floral imagery but engage us most immediately with their sheer formal beauty.
